Meet Samantha Kiever - Insects Limited’s Newest Research Entomologist
Insects Limited is excited to announce the addition of a new staff entomologist joining our Research and Development department. After receiving her degree in entomology, Samantha (Sam) Kiever joined the Insects Limited team, filling a role as a Research Assistant.
Sam spent the past two summers (2021 & 2022) as an intern in Insects Limited’s R & D lab. Sam finished her entomology degree requirements this past fall and graduated from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln in December 2022. Her entomology Capstone Project was centered on Webbing Clothes Moth (Tineola bisselliella) and the potential for larvae to damage textiles that are not generally considered “at risk.” This study was an offshoot of her work at Insects Limited.
Pat Kelley, President of Insects Limited, said this about Sam, “We are all proud of Sam for the hard work that she has done to get to where she is today. During Sam’s time as an intern here, she displayed a strong knowledge base of entomology and quickly embraced working with the stored product insect pests that are our focus here. Sam is such a smart and focused scientist and I know that she will be a great asset to an already strong team of Board Certified Entomologists, James Feston and Ethan Estabrook in our R & D Division.”
A few of Sam’s duties at Insects Limited will be researching new pheromones and attractants, testing new and innovative trapping systems, offering support and expertise on scientific research papers and, the all-important task of maintaining our colonies of research insects.
On the personal side, Sam and her husband Glenn enjoy hiking with their dog, Anteros. Besides Anteros, they also have a snake, beetles, cockroaches, a tarantula, and a scorpion that they enjoy spending time caring for and watching. Sam has been working diligently on a project to breed and rear blue death feigning beetles (Asbolus verrucosus) to adulthood.
She hopes to keep these beetles in the pet trade without needing to steal them from their habitats in the future. Sam also enjoys painting, building computers, hiking, and driving. Long Sunday drives are a joy for her, though she hopes one day to be able to race cars as a hobby.
