Monarch Butterfly Tagging
Monarch butterflies fly thousands of miles from central Mexico to the northern United States and Canada and back again each year. They do this amazing feat across four generations with the 4th generation being much longer-lived and traveling the longest distance back to the overwintering grounds in central Mexico. Tagging the 4th generation of Monarch butterflies help scientists better understand their incredible journey through mark and recapture surveys.
Insects Limited’s, Ethan Estabrook, participated in the Carmel Parks Department Monarch tagging event on September 4th. Weather was not ideal for finding and capturing butterflies, but after hours of searching one was captured and tagged. This individual will be tracked through Monarch Watch, an organization dedicated to the education, conservation, and research of Monarch butterflies.
Monarch butterfly populations are declining from the loss of habitat for their breeding, migrating, and overwintering needs. You can help Monarch butterflies by planting native milkweed such as the common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca), butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa), or swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata). You can find these native milkweeds through your local native plant society.
